I am a 38 year old female, who has suffered with chronic pain since I can remember. I had a cervical disectomy and fusion at C5-6 about 2 years ago, still taking pain meds and still suffer with quite a bit of chronic pain. Before I decided to go for such an invasive procedure, I endured the pain and slowly added more and more medicine to cover the pain I couldn’t take. I searched every nook and corner, for even a week with just half the pain I was dealt. I tried massage therapy, acupuncture, solu-medrol shots in back and front of my neck, I did physical therapy, yoga, accupressure, psychological therapy, pain management course, orthopedic physician advice, neurosurgeon advice, personal advice from others I knew with similar problems, TENS unit, radiofrequency therapy, hot and cold pads and wraps, traction units (have 3),
portable massage gagets, inversion table, stability ball and any other possible equipment, advice, or procedure I could get my hands on.

I can’t really tell if the neck surgery really did anything, because I believe the pain had just referred to my neck or the thoracic curve had caused it to degenerate. I fortunately to off of the heavy pain meds (Vicodin) and boy was that hard. I couldn’t believe I could be so hooked and I am a pharmacist. I knew the possibilities, but thought I could stop anytime.

Well, I have been working with a personal trainer for the past 3 and 1/2 months to build my core and correct some posture issues and it has helped, but I am at a stand still and very frustrated with the pain, especially when I wake up in the morning. I have tried to cut small amounts of meds, but pain is worse.

My pain is on the right side, as is the curve in my upper spine ( an orthopedic Dr. says it is 25 degrees). I have been having worse pain in my right shoulder, right upper chest, and all of upper back from bra strap up, as well as in neck. I also have hypermobility in my spine, elbows, shoulders, finger, just about everywhere, which I think adds to the problems. I want to be active again.

I remember dislocating my shoulder 2-3 times when I was 5-6 years old and I thought that was painful. But I had my first taste of real pain when I was about 15 years when I messed up my neck at sports practice. I went to my dads chiropractor (which I almost went to school for) and it got better after about a month. But over the years it has gone from irritation to a full-blown chronic problem effecting all aspects of my life. In fact, I have had to work part-time and sometimes unable to work at all due to the severe pain. It sure takes a toll on every part of your life!!!

Please review my crazy situation and let me know if this is something that could be helpful to me. Even if it gives me a little relief, I will be forever grateful, cause I know there is no cure-all for most things. Heck, look at the drug industry, they make money left and right to just cover up symptoms of disease etc. and then you have to take another drug for the side effects of the first one.

Thank you so very much for your time and great work in this area, hope to hear from you soon!!!

    Kerianne
